BLOG: Equipped For Life | Pastor Jon

Eph. 4:12 “Their (those in 5 fold ministry) responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and build up the Church, the body of Christ”
Paul makes it very clear that the role of those in full time ministry is not to do all the work of the Church, but rather to “equip” the people of God to do it. By the grace of God, I have made that my approach to youth ministry from the time I started in 2004.
Yes we can have fun in church, and yes I believe students can and should enjoy their time here, but the goal is never entertainment. The goal is about equipping. Students have the mall and movies where they can go to be be entertained, but the church needs to be about becoming who God has called you to be.
This CANNOT be accomplished without the presence of God in our services. I have other youth pastors share frustrations about how they feel that they can’t complete with the entertainment industry when it comes to keeping kids attention. I tell them you’re not supposed to! Fancy lights and cool videos are not bad, but the defining factor and ultimate attraction of a church service MUST be that God is there.
Ultimately my responsibility as a leader is to point them to Jesus. To model that a life lived for Christ is the most fulfilling and rewarding life you can live. To teach them that time spent in the word and prayer isn’t just some obligatory exercise that we do because we’re Christians, but an actual way to know and experience God. (John 17:3)
I pray that in the four or so years we have them in our youth ministry, we do all that we can in the natural to equip them for the next season of their lives, while relying on God’s grace to do the supernatural work of continued transformation. (Rom.12:2)
I am so grateful to those parents who allow us to partner with them in their child’s spiritual development, and please continue to pray for every student on that journey.
